The University of the Visayas- Compostela Campus was built in 1954 through the philanthropic mission vision of Don Vicente Gullas and with the concerted efforts of Mr. Antonio V. Bacalla, Mr. Timoteo Belleza and the Mayor at that time, Mr. Antonio K. Alfonso.

That was after seeing a need of a secondary level of education for the elementary graduates in town, U.V. President Don Vicente Gullas then confirmed and pioneered the opening of a high school branch named “Compostela Private High School” and assigned Mr. Antonio V. Bacalla its first principal.

Back in 1950’s, there were only two major livelihoods in Compostela (farming and fishing). Most parents considered it costly to be sending their children to Danao or Cebu City thus leaving them with no choice but to be contended with a lower level of education attainment for their children.

The school’s operation makes it convenient for the residents and neighboring municipalities to send their children for a secondary education. Many are glad and availed the educational opportunity.

The Compostela Private High School started its formal classes in the school year 1954-1955. Its first set of graduates in the year 1958.

Being the sole educational institution that offers secondary education in town for a long time, the school’s population immensely increased yearly from 10 students to its peak in school year 1992 – 1993 with 1,200 students.

The school plays a vital role in the educational and social development of the Municipality of Compostela. It develops parents’ understanding, consciousness and new perceptions on education.

Many of the graduates succeeded in their field and worked hand – in – hand to uplift the economic conditions and life style of the municipality thus improving the quality of life of the townspeople.

Truly, the University of the Visayas – Compostela Campus paves way to an educational conscious community which clings by many loyalists. A generation to generation thread of enrollees making the school second in rank in terms of population for Junior high school in the town in the midst of hype of educational institutions these days.
