PhD major in English Language Teaching


Program Description

The program prepares the English language specialists in the discipline of language and literature teaching. It advances preparation for English teachers, language education supervisors and program heads in teaching of English as a second language in all levels. Moreover, it is geared towards intensive research in the field of language education as graduate students will be engaged in critical review of issues and developments in multi-cultural settings that inform the study and teaching of English to second language learners. The ultimate focus of the program is to produce ELT specialists as curriculum leaders and researchers who can contribute to the generation of ideas and pedagogical practices in English language teaching.


Program Policies
  Qualification for Admission

The student should have completed a master’s thesis program in Education. The student entering from a non-thesis master’s program in education is required to complete Methods and Statistics of Research in the Master’s degree level. Those entering from fields other than education are required to take a minimum of twelve units of undergraduate or graduate professional education subjects in addition to other degree requirements.

  Reminders
  • An INC grade will be given to students who failed to comply with the final requirements of the course;
  • INC grade should be complied within one year, otherwise a grade of 5.0 will automatically be reflected on the report card;
  • The maximum units to be enrolled for each trimester should be strictly observed;
  • A comprehensive examination will be given after the completion of all Level 1 courses;
  • The Thesis writing course can only be taken after passing the comprehensive examination;
  • A schedule for Proposal Hearing and Final Oral Defense will be posted. Application must be made within the approved schedule only;
  Compre Exam / Terminal Paper

After completing the academic requirements of 36 units, the doctorand can apply for the Comprehensive Examination which will cover the basic courses, major courses, and cognate courses.

  Requirments for Graduation
  • Six (6) Hardbound copies and a soft copy of publicly defended practice-based dissertation.
  • At least one (1) publication in a refereed journal or juried creative work.
